Chimneys are a great part of our homes. They add beauty and warmth. However, it’s important to know some facts about them that will make sure they are a safe part of our homes. Also, we want to know about the other causes of house fires, and how we can best prevent them.
The risk factors for fire injuries and death from house fires according to the CDC include:
- Approximately 4 out of 10 home fire deaths occur in homes without smoke alarms.
- Most residential fires occur during the winter months (prime chimney usage).
- Alcohol use contributes to almost 40% of residential fire deaths.
The Fire Equipment Manufacturers’ Association has found that every 18 seconds, a fire department somewhere in the United States is responding to a fire. They also found the U.S. has the third highest number of fire deaths each year, after Finland and Hungary. What does this tell us?
We must get serious about fire prevention. It is so much better to prepare on the front end. Accidents will happen, but anything preventable is just that. Make sure your living space is up to fire safety codes. Teach your children and family members about fire safety. Their lives may depend on it.
